GREEK CINEMA DAYS

The "Greek Cinema Days" were first presented in Berlin in 1993. The event was organised during the first three years by members of the greek-german youth centre "Filia". Since 1996 the responsibility for the organisation is taken over by an organisation team that consists of professionals in cultural management and cinema. This small film festival has as its target to present the Greek cinema in its various facets to the public of Berlin (independent of its language or nationality). We present young filmmakers with short or long films; filmmakers whose films have won important prizes in greek and international film festivals as well as filmmakers that belong to the founders of the greek cinema, their works are considered as classics. The "Greek Cinema Days" took place in one or two off-cinemas in Berlin. 1998 the festival moved to the "Haus der Kulturen der Welt" and since 2000 it is presented in co-operation with the "Friends of the German Cinematheque" in the cinema Arsenal 1+2.

Since the fifth festival (1996) the "Greek Cinema Days" have a central theme:

  • 1996: "Ancient myths in Greek and international cinema"
  • 1997: "Greek women filmmakers"
  • 1998: "Turning points"
  • 1999: "End of the century" and "Greek filmmakers in Germany and Austria"
  • 2000: "Passions"
  • 2001: "Greek Filmmakers of the Diaspora"
  • 2002: 10th Cinema Days in Berlin

Since 1997 the festival was enriched with short films and since 1998 there is an official co-operation with the Drama Short Film Festival. In this way Berlin became one more station of the project ‘The short film festival of Drama travels’. Within the frame of this co-operation we show every year the films that got the official prizes together with a selection of the most interesting short films of the year's production.

The press in Germany and Greece accompanies since several years the organisation of this event. In the previous years there have been reports about the "Greek Cinema Days" in the following media:

  • in the prime time news bulletin of the second channel of the Greek national television (ET-2) with a report by the Berlin correspondent
  • in the television programme "Babylon" of West Deutsches Rundfunk (WDR) in Cologne
  • in the greek radio stations ERA 3 and 98,4 Athens with organisers' interviews
  • in the greek language programme of the "Deutsche Welle", Cologne and Munich
  • in the multilingual programme "Rendez-vous in Deutschland" of the Hessisches Rundfunk (HR), Frankfurt/M
  • in the programme "Metro" of SFB 4-Multikulti (Berlin), in Radio 1 (Potsdam) programmes, in Jazz-Radio and in other local radio programmes
  • in the radio station Deutschlandfunk
  • in the Berlin newspapers: "Berliner Zeitung", "Tageszeitung", "Tagesspiegel", "Berliner Morgenpost" and "Die Welt"
  • in the Athenian newspapers: "Eleftherotypia", "Kathimerini", "Ta Nea", "Risospastis", "Express", "I Vradini", "Naftemporiki", and also in the "Athener Zeitung" published in german.

The first three events were supported financially by the state (Land) of Berlin. The general secretary for the Greeks abroad of the Greek Ministry of Culture supports this event since 1996.
